It's time to register for PREPARE Kansas 2016! To sign up for the Marais des Cygnes District Prepare KS challenge and be eligible for weekly incentives:
1. Visit or call our local district offices at Paola (913)294-4306 or Mound City (913)795-2829. Come this first week and pick up a freezer/refrigerator thermometer as a gift for signing up.
2. E-mail maraisdescygnes@listserv.ksu.edu and give us your name, address, phone and e-mail address. We'll save a thermometer for you!

Prepare Kansas Week #4 - September 25 - 30 - What to do once the power is back on!
Marais des Cygnes District Prepare Kansas Challenge - Week 4 - Clean out your refrigerator and get rid of spoiled and out of date foods, condiments etc. Registered Participants will receive a Bi-Metallic stemmed food thermometer for completing this weeks challenge.
Prepare Kansas Week #3 - September 18 - 24 - When in Doubt Throw it Out!
After an extended power outage, you need to assess if your food is safe to keep or not. NEVER taste food to determine if it is safe or not. In general, if food has an unusual color, odor or texture, throw it out! #PrepareKS#KSRE

Prepare Kansas Week #2 - September 11 - 17 - As a Power Outage Happens
Marais des Cygnes District Prepare Kansas Challenge - Week 2 - Put a freezer/refrigerator thermometer in your refrigerator and freezer. You will need to take a picture of it on your phone or camera and email jramsey3@ksu.edu or come by and show us the picture. Registered Participants with our district that complete this weekly challenge will earn a set of cold gel packs for a cooler.
Prepare Kansas Week #1 - September 4 - 10 - ahead of a power outage
Marais des Cygnes District Prepare Kansas Challenge - Week 1 - Build an Emergency Kit that includes enough food, water and medical supplies for the needs of your household for at least 72 hours. You will need to take a picture of what you have collected on your phone or camera and email jramsey3@ksu.edu or come by and show us the picture of your completed kit. Registered Participants with our district that complete this weekly challenge will earn a ziploc Weathershield Storage Box (15 gal) to use for your emergency food kit.
September is National Preparedness Month. It is also the month of the K-State Research and Extension annual Prepare Kansas online challenge. Prepare Kansas 2016 focuses on keeping food safe in emergency situations.
Get prepared by building a kit that includes food, water, and medical supplies for at least 3 days. Click on the graphic below to link to information on building an emergency food kit. Be sure to include a manual can opener and eating utensils!

2016 marks the third annual Prepare Kansas online challenge during the month of September
This year’s theme is food safety. Weekly themes related to what to do:
· ahead of a power outage,
· as a power outage happens,
· after a power outage, and
· after a flood.
The state-wide campaign will be delivered via the K-State Research and Extension Facebook page and there is no registration needed for the state-wide event. Each week during September there will be three posts. The first post will introduce the weekly topic, the second will aim to increase knowledge, and the third will challenge readers to action. Facebook posts will appear on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Each week there will be related/accompanying posts on the Prepare Kansas blog, http://blogs.k-state.edu/preparekansas/
